Preserving Belize’s Wildlife: Exploring the Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center
Founded in 1983 by Sharon Matola, The Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center began as a backyard sanctuary for wildlife featured in forest documentaries. Recognizing the lack of awareness among locals about their own native species, it evolved into a small zoo and education center. At its core, this remarkable institution is driven by a steadfast commitment to safeguarding Belize’s extraordinary animal population for the prosperity and enjoyment of generations to come.
During the onset of the pandemic, The Belize Zoo, much like numerous organizations worldwide, encountered unprecedented challenges stemming from restrictions and a significant decline in visitor numbers. Struggling to sustain its operations, the zoo received a transformative donation of BZ$500,000 in 2022 from Caye International Bank, spearheaded by Chairman Joel Nagel and Director Michael Cobb. Their unwavering commitment to protecting Belize’s diverse ecosystem has allowed the zoo to refocus its efforts towards the pursuit of multiple conservation goals, with a special emphasis on safeguarding the well-being of tapirs, jaguars, and yellow-headed parrots.
Among the impressive array of 45 native species, The Belize Zoo is home to tapirs, ocelots, coatimundis, harpy eagles, pumas, toucans, and many more. The zoo has undertaken the noble task of rescuing, nurturing, and rehabilitating over 150 animals, thereby contributing to the flourishing and vibrant wildlife population in the region.
The Belize Zoo offers a diverse range of programs and immersive experiences that actively involve individuals in their mission. The “Adopt an Animal” initiative allows for meaningful contribution to animal maintenance through generous donations. For a truly special encounter, visitors can partake in VIP tours, granting them exclusive access to observe these captivating creatures in their natural habitats. Moreover, the educational hub known as the “Belize Zoo Jungle” serves as a knowledge center, while their Conservation Camp caters specifically to young individuals aged 12-17, fostering a deep appreciation for conservation and empowering the next generation to actively protect and safeguard their natural heritage.
